VASM Mission

"Plan, manage and conduct research and development programs to analytically predict and enhance structural life and structural response to aerodynamic, ground and environmental loads. Develop, demonstrate and transition technologies to extend the life of and/or reduce costs of the aging aircraft fleet. Develop design requirements, guidance and procedures for newly developed aerospace structures technology. Develop methods for analytically predicting and validating the response and life of structures exposed to combined load and thermal environments. Develop lightweight, supportable structural concepts for advanced aerospace vehicles capable of withstanding extreme environments. Transition and transfer new structures technology to the USAF, DoD, other government agencies and industry."

General Organization

VASM is the Analytical Structural Mechanics Branch of the Structures Division of the Air Vehicle Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory, which is part of the Air Force Material Command. This is simply abbreviated as AFRL/VASM.

VASM is located on Wright-Patterson Air Force base along with a large chunk of the Air Force Research Laboratory.

Projects

As stated in the mission VASM develops projects to aid in "...analytically predicting and validating the response and life of structures...". To this end we have developed numerous projects for both DoD and industry use. Two of our most notable achievements are the AFGROW Crack Growth Anaylysis program, and the Handbook for Damage Tolerant Design(DTD). More information on these projects can be found in our Projects section.
